Stem Mastering
More control than two-track mastering — balance and tone addressed per stem group without reopening the mix.
Stem mastering sits between mixing and traditional mastering. Instead of one stereo file, we work from grouped stems — drums, bass, instruments, vocals — which allows corrections that a two-track master simply cannot reach.
When it helps
If the vocal is slightly buried, the low end is fighting the kick, or the mix is close but not quite balanced, stem mastering resolves it without a full remix and without going back to the mix engineer.
Process
- Stem review and gain structure assessment
- Per-group tonal and dynamic treatment
- Balance corrections referenced against the original mix
- Final stereo master plus alternate versions
- Platform-targeted loudness variants on request
Frequently Asked Questions
How is stem mastering different from normal mastering?
Traditional mastering works from a single stereo file. Stem mastering works from grouped stems, allowing balance corrections between elements.
How should I export stems?
As grouped buses — typically drums, bass, instruments and vocals — all starting at the same timeline position with mix processing intact.
Is it better than two-track mastering?
Not always. It is better when the mix needs balance corrections. A well-balanced mix often does not need the extra control.
Can you fix a bad mix this way?
It improves a great deal, but it is not a substitute for a remix when the underlying arrangement or balance has fundamental problems.
